INTRO.
Text written by Sir Robert Dallington 16th century : English courtier, travel writer, translater. He also was master of the London Charterhouse.
His two major works are two accounts of his travels in Italy and France, which are named ‘A Survey of the Great Duke's State of Tuscany, in the yeare of our Lord 1596’ published in 1605. And ‘A Method for Travell: shewed by taking the view of France as it stoode in the yeare of our Lord 1598‘. (published in 1606).
The first thing that stroke us when we read this text was that, even if it could be considered as an historical text because of the informations it gave us, it didn’t have the « tone ». Indeed, Robert Dallington seems to give a very critical point of view over the French in this text. Why did he saw the French as undisciplined ? How does the history of England and France influe over this vision ? This is what we are going to see.

I ) The reason why he saw Frenchman as undisciplined

A) The hatred against the King.

« It is incredible to believe, and odious to hear, how the Frenchman will talk, and impudently utter what he foolishly conceiveth, not only of all foreign States and Princes of the world, but even of their own State and King himself » (l. 7-9)

- at the time when Rob. Dall. went to France, Henri Ivth was the king of France.
> before being actually liked by the People, Henri IV was one of the most hated kings of France
> especially by the catholics (bc he considered himself in the wars of religion as the leader of protestantism). (His effigy was burned, outraged – and he suffered many assassination attempts : he actually died by assassination).
> he was even assimilitated to the « Devil » or the « Antechrist » by the catholics  : and this might be what Robert Dallington is speaking of here. While travelling 2 years in France, he might have witnessed the hatred towards the king of that time.

> We know that the French people were never really « soft » with their kings (eventhough it happened way later (19th century) we can take as an example the way Victor Hugo attacked Napoleon IIIrd in many of his works, even going to the point where he wrote a whole collection of poems called « Les Châtiments » : which lead him to be banished from France by the King (Belgium)).

« He hath besides this liberty of speaking, a property incident to such like natures : namely, an inquisitif listening and hearkening after news, which is an old fashion of theirs& hath continued withthem many hundred years. » (l. 19-22)
> Robert Dallington doesn’t see as positive the « freedom of speech » of the french people –
> he even seems to consider it as a nefast influence over the monarchy which appears to be the main tool for the people to manifest their « hatred » towards their King (that, according to Robert Dallington, they should respect).

B) England and France : a tumultuous relation

> At that time, England & France didn’t have the best relationship, which has deteriorated because of one major main event : the Reformation (Protestant Reformation). While France remained catholic, England became Protestan : this lead to a major friction because of religious issues between both of the countries.
